21 cricket numbers that standout in 2021

  •
  • Australia's 3-0 annihilation of England in the Ashes meant that the end of 2021 was as dramatic as the beginning, which saw India stun the cricketing world by chasing down Australia's 328 at The Gabba. In other highlights of the year, CSK hammered their way to a fourth IPL title after a disastrous 2021 while New Zealand went on to become the champions of the inaugural WTC. Australia also went on to lift their maiden World T20 title in 2021 while Rohit Sharma produced the highest impact Test hundred of the year against England in Chennai to inspire an Indian fightback.

There were a few numbers which defined the cricketing calendar this year, we present the 21 which stand out, ranked in order of impact.

1.

329/7: India's historic chase at The Gabba

India defied history and odds to gun down 328 on Day 5 at The Gabba to win the series 2-1. It was their second successive series win Down Under and in terms of the circumstances, a greater one! Australia had not lost a Test at The Gabba in 32 years. India had only chased 300 or more in the fourth innings twice in their history. India's highest successful chase previously in Australia was 233 for 6 in Adelaide in 2003. The highest successful chase by a visiting team at The Gabba was 170 for 3 by England in 1978. Moreover, India were without the services of a number of their main strike bowlers Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Ishant Sharma. The standout knock of the chase was Rishabh Pant's undefeated 89 off 138 deliveries.

2.

1: Australia's maiden triumph at the World T20

Australia defied form and forecasts to lift their maiden World T20 title, beating trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand in the final in Dubai. With 13 wins and 16 losses in 30 matches in the two years prior to the start of the tournament, Australia had the worst win-loss ratios (0.812) in the world amongst major cricket playing nations and no one had given them a chance to make the semis, leave alone lift the trophy. David Warner was the highest impact player of the series (the second-highest run-getter) and scored 289 runs in 7 matches at a strike rate of 146.7.

3.

3-0: Australia annihilate England in the Ashes

Australia routed England in Brisbane, Adelaide and Melbourne to wrap up the Ashes in under 12 days in what was one of the most humiliating defeats for the visitors in Ashes history. England were dismissed for under-200 totals in four of the six innings and had a combined batting average of 17.96 in the series - their fifth-worst performance in the Ashes history and worst in 131 years! England were skittled for just 68 in the second innings of the Boxing Day Test at the MCG - their lowest total in Australia in 117 years!

4.

161: Rohit Sharma's stunning hundred in Chennai

India were trailing 0-1 in the four-match home series against England and were in trouble losing early wickets in the second Test in Chennai. A loss would have had devastating consequences and severely reduced India's chances of making the final of the WTC. Rohit Sharma then produced one of the most magical hundreds in Indian conditions, hammering 161 off just 231 deliveries. He dominated the English attack even as others failed around him to lead India's transformation. An inspired Indian team not only won the Test but went on to win the series. It was the highest impact knock of the year.

5.

4: CSK win their fourth IPL title

CSK witnessed a dramatic transformation from 2020 and went on to lift their fourth IPL title, beating KKR by 27 runs in the final in Dubai. The MS Dhoni-led franchise did not qualify for the playoffs in 2020 in what was their worst performance in the IPL. Ruturaj Gaikwad, Faf du Plessis, Moeen Ali, Shardul Thakur and Ravindra Jadeja were the five highest impact players for CSK.

6.

0: The combined hundreds of India's Big 3 in Test cricket

It was a disastrous year for Virat Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane in Test cricket. They did not register a single Test ton in 2021 between them in as many as 68 innings. The Indian captain scored 536 runs in 19 innings at an average of 28.21, Pujara - 702 in 26 innings at an average of 28.08 and Rahane 479 in 23 innings at an average of 20.82.

Kohli has now gone 60 international innings without registering a hundred. He last reached triple figures against Bangladesh in the Kolkata Test in November, 2019. His numbers in Test cricket in this time-frame are quite dismal - 652 runs in 25 innings at an average of 26.08 with just five fifties and a high failure rate of 52%.

7.

1915: The maximum run-aggregate in international cricket

Mohammad Rizwan was the highest run-getter in international cricket in 2021. He had an aggregate of 1915 runs in 45 innings at an average of 56.32 with two hundreds and 15 fifties. 69% of his runs were from one format - Rizwan blasted 1326 runs in 26 T20I appearances at a stunning average of 73.66 and strike rate of 134.89 with one hundred and 12 fifties. There was a difference of 387 runs between him and the second-highest run-getter - Babar Azam - in T20I cricket in the calendar year.

Rizwan was, by far, the highest impact T20I player in 2021. In fact, his aggregate in 2021 is the highest for any batsman in a calendar year in the format. He played a leading role in taking Pakistan to the semi-final of the World T20, ending as the third-highest scorer with 281 runs in six innings, including three fifties.

8.

2-1*: The series scoreline in favour of India in England

India toured England for a five-match marquee Test-series in August and ended the tour with a 2-1 lead with the fifth and final Test rescheduled due to COVID-19 for the summer next year. Rohit Sharma, with 368 runs, including a magnificent ton at The Oval, was India's highest scorer of the series. Jasprit Bumrah was the leading wicket-taker for the visitors with 18 wickets.

9.

1-12: Lucky 13 for Pakistan - won their first match against India in a World Cup

Pakistan thrashed India by 10 wickets in the T20 World Cup, recording their first win over the arch-rivals in a World Cup encounter - 50-overs or T20 - in 13 such meetings. Shaheen Shah Afridi wreaked havoc on the top order before Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam gunned down the 152-run target in the 18th over.

10.

4/5: India were the best Test side winning 4 of the 5 series

Although they went down to New Zealand in the final of the WTC in Southampton in June, India were the best Test team of the year winning four of the five series they played in 2021. They started off with one of the greatest wins in Test history - a second successive series under Down Under against all odds with a depleted XI against a full-strength Australian unit. They then came back from behind to beat England 3-1 at home before taking a 2-1 lead in England in a series which will conclude next summer. They capped of the year with a series win against the WTC winners New Zealand at home while also taking a 1-0 lead against South Africa breaching another home bastion at the Centurion.

11.

635: The maximum run-aggregate in IPL 2021

Ruturaj Gaikwad was the highest run-getter of IPL 2021, scoring 635 runs in 16 matches with one hundred and four fifties. He was in blistering form in the UAE leg with 439 runs at a strike rate of 140 and was instrumental in taking CSK to their fourth title.

12.

7-61: Kyle Jamieson's high impact performance in the WTC final

Kyle Jamieson bagged seven wickets in the match to return as the highest impact player in New Zealand's triumph against India in the final of the inaugural WTC in Southampton in 2021. His dismissals included Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant in the first innings before he again accounted for the Indian captain and Cheteshwar Pujara in successive overs in the second to break the backbone of the Indian top order.

13.

3: Ten wickets by a bowler in an innings - the third time in Test history

Ajaz Patel entrenched his name in the record books by becoming the third bowler in the history of Test cricket to pick all ten wickets in a Test match innings. Patel achieved the feat on Day 2 of the second Test against India at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. He joined Jim Laker and Anil Kumble on the honours board.

14.

258: Ashwin-Vihari partnership in terms of deliveries at the SCG

The series was tied at 1-1. Set 407, India were in a precarious position at 272 for 5 with 42 overs still left in the day's play. An injured Hanuma Vihari joined hands with R Ashwin and put together a match-saving stand which kept a full-fledged Australian attack at bay for 258 deliveries. Vihari batted with a limp and remained unbeaten on 23, defying Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc for 161 deliveries. Ashwin battled back spasms and occupied the crease for 128 deliveries. Australia were unable to dislodge the partnership as India pulled off a famous draw.

15.

6000: Virat Kohli surpasses Mount 6K in the IPL

Virat Kohli became the first batsman in IPL history to cross the landmark of 6000 aggregate runs. He achieved the feat in his 196th IPL match against Rajasthan Royals at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

16.

32: Harshal Patel's wicket-tally in the IPL

Harshal Patel returned a record 32 wickets in 15 matches at an average of 14.34 and strike rate of 10.5 in IPL 2021. It was the joint-highest in any season of the IPL. Dwayne Bravo had also bagged 32 wickets for CSK in 2013.

17.

400: R Ashwin became the second-fastest ever to 400 Test wickets

R Ashwin became the second-fastest bowler to reach the milestone of 400 Test wickets on Day 2 of the third Test against England in Ahmedabad. The off spinner - who took 77 Tests to reach the milestone - broke the record of Sir Richard Hadlee and Dale Steyn, who had taken 80 Tests to cross the 400-wicket mark. Muttiah Muralitharan made it to the 400-Club in 72 Tests. Ashwin returned with a staggering 32 wickets at an average of 14.71 in the four-Test series against England at home. It was amongst the five best performances in a home series by an Indian bowler in Test cricket. Ashwin was the highest wicket-taker in Tests in 2021.

18.

10000: Mithali Raj became the first Indian woman cricketer to reach the 10000 Club

Mithali Raj became the first Indian woman cricketer to reach the milestone of 10000 international runs during an ODI against South Africa in Lucknow this year. Only one other woman has achieved this feat before - England's Charlotte Edwards.

19.

1708: Joe Root overtook Tendulkar and Ponting in Test aggregate in a calendar year

Notwithstanding England's abysmal show in the Ashes, Joe Root was in scintillating form in Test cricket in 2021 with an aggregate of 1708 runs in 15 Tests (29 innings) at an average of 61 with six hundreds. The England captain ended at number three on the list of most runs in a calendar year in Test history behind Mohammad Yousuf (1788 in 2006) and Viv Richards (1710 in 1976).

To highlight how poor the rest of the English batsmen were in the calendar year, the combined aggregate of Rory Burns, Jonny Bairstow, Ollie Pope and Dom Sibley in 2021 was a mere 1645 runs - lower than Root's individual aggregate.

20.

0.44: England's worst W/L in Tests since 2000

England won just four and lost as many as nine of the 15 Tests they played in the calendar year. Their win-loss ratio was the worst amongst all the major Test playing nations with the exception of Zimbabwe and Bangladesh. It was also their worst win-loss in a calendar year in the new millennium. After starting the year with a bang, registering a fine win in Sri Lanka, England were hammered 1-3 in India and lost at home against New Zealand while trailing India 1-2. They ended the year conceding the 'Urn', getting annihilated in the first three Tests in what was one of their worst performances in Ashes history.

21.

24: Record number of innings to score 1000 T20I runs

Dawid Malan became the fastest to 1000 T20I runs achieving the feat in just his 24th innings - against India in Ahmedabad on the 20th of March. He broke the record of Babar Azam who had scaled the 1000-club in his 26th inning. Kohli is number three on the list (27 innings).

Want to manufacture BrahMos so that no country has audacity to cast evil eye on us: Rajnath Singh

Want to manufacture BrahMos so that no country has audacity to cast evil eye on us: Rajnath Singh

Lucknow: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday said that India is manufacturing BrahMos missiles not to attack any country and it is developed to prevent the enemies from looking the country with "an evil eye."

"The BrahMos missile and other weapons and defence equipment we are manufacturing are not to attack any other country.

It has never been the character of India to attack any other country or grab even an inch of land of any country," he said. "We want to manufacture BrahMos on Indian soil so that no country has the audacity to cast an evil eye on India," Singh stated.

"India should have nuclear deterrents so that no country in the world can attack us, and we have shown this," the Defence Minister said after laying the foundation stone of the Defence Technologies and Test Centre and the BrahMos Manufacturing Centre.

"There is a neighbouring country. It got separated from India sometime back. I don't know why its intentions vis-a-vis India are always bad. It committed acts of terrorism in Uri and Pulwama," the defence minister said, referring to Pakistan.

Talking about India's retaliation to terror attacks, he said, "And then our prime minister took a decision, and we went to the soil of that country and destroyed terrorist hideouts, and when there was a need for airstrikes, we did that successfully. We gave the message that if somebody dares to cast an evil eye on us, then not just on this side of the border, but we can go to the other side and hit them. This is India's strength,"

In September 2016 and February 2019, India carried out cross-border strikes in response to terror attacks in Uri and Pulwama. UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said, "The stand of the country is clear, and it does take security lightly. This is the new India, which does not provoke first, but also does not spare anyone who provokes it."

The defence minister praised him for expediting land acquisition for the projects they inaugurated. "When I spoke to Yogiji and expressed the desire to establish this project, he did not take a second and said that land will be made available at the earliest. I express my thanks that the chief minister for making 200 acre of land available in just one and a half months," he said.

PM Narendra Modi Offers Prayers To Sant Ravidas In Varanasi: To poll-bound UP, Modi gifts a revamped Kashi Temple

NEW DELHI: Prime minister Narendra Modi on Monday launched the first phase of the Kashi Vishwanath Dham project in his Lok Sabha constituency of Varanasi amid chanting of Vedic hymns and 'shlokas' hailing Lord Shiva and recalled the ancient glory of the town saying that the renovated Temple would enable the devotees to have a glimpse of the glorious past of the country.

Clad in saffron clothes, Modi performed the rituals in the presence of a large number of saints from across the country after paying obeisance at the famous Kal Bhairav temple in the city. He had carried the holy waters from the Ganga and offered the same on the Shivalingam. He took a dip in the Ganga and also offered water to the Sun and puja of the holy river.

There were shouts of 'Bum Bum Bhole' (greeting Lord Shiva) from the crowds as Modi's cavalcade passed through on way to the Kashi Vishwanath Dham.

Speaking after launching the Kashi Vishwanath Dham, which was spread over five lakh square feet and was equipped with all modern facilities for the devotees, said that the Dham was an example of the confluence of the ancient and the modern.

He said that Kashi (the old name of Varanasi) had been home to several iconic personalities, who enlightened the world with their wisdom. ''Kashi has witnessed many ups and downs....If people like Aurangzeb (one of the Mughal kings) made attempt to kill our culture, there also were people like Shivaji, who protected the same,'' Modi said.

The prime minister said that despite efforts to destroy Kashi, the city had moved on and had been able to preserve its rich culture.

The Kashi Vishwanath Corridor Project, whose foundation stone had been laid by the prime minister in March 2019, had a Vedic library, meditation platforms, virtual Vedic gallery, a cafeteria, food court and other facilities for the pilgrims. An estimated Rs. 1000 crore had been spent on the Project.

The prime minister launched the first phase of the Project on Monday.

The Project was mired in some controversies also as a section of the people, whose shops and houses were razed to clear the way for the Temple, voiced their opposition to the same. Hundreds of smaller, ancient temples were also razed for the Project.

The Temple had been renovated after 350 years, according to the officials associated with the Project. ''Rani Ahilya Bai had earlier renovated the Temple,'' said one of the officials of the Kashi Vishwanath Trust in Varanasi.

The officials also said that care was taken to ensure that the ancient structure of the Temple was not demolished and its traditional form remained the same.

The launching, which came barely a few months ahead of the next assembly polls, was turned into a mega event by the Uttar Pradesh government, which had invited thousands of seers and saints from different parts of the country. The UP government would also hold its cabinet meeting here a few days later. The chief ministers of the BJP ruled states would also be visiting Varanasi on Tuesday.

Pakistan Church leaders condemn lynching of Sri Lankan national, demand justice!

Pakistan Church leaders condemn lynching of Sri Lankan national, demand justice

The Pakistani church leadership has condemned the killing and burning of the body of a Sri Lankan Christian by a Sialkot mob on Saturday.

As many as 124 people have been arrested in the lynching of a Sri Lankan export manager by dozens of factory workers in Sialkot.

The gruesome killing of Priyantha Kumara, who was working in a sports garments manufacturing factory as a general manager for the last 10 years, on blasphemy allegations had shocked and pained the entire country, said Church of Pakistan Moderator/President Bishop Dr Azad Marshall and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Lahore Sebastian Francis Shaw.

"Mr Kumara's cold-blooded murder has left us all grieving. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family and to the Sri Lankan people on this great tragedy. As Pakistanis, our heads hang in shame," they were quoted as saying by The Nation newspaper.

On Friday, a mob had tortured Diyawadana to death before burning his body in Sialkot over alleged blasphemy. The incident took place in the Wazirabad Road area.

Local media reports said the workers of private factories attacked the export manager of the factory Diyawadana and burnt his body after killing him, Dawn newspaper reported.

According to Bishop Marshall, the public outcry over the Sialkot incident showed that a huge majority of Pakistani citizens were opposed to growing extremism and intolerance in society.

Meanwhile, the National Commission on Human Rights (NCHR) has demanded a speedy and impartial probe into the lynching of Sri Lankan factory manager Priyantha Kumara Diyawadana in Sialkot.

"We, at the commission, are deeply perturbed by the brutal mob violence and blatant violation of human rights, especially against a guest in our country. It is unfortunate that the commission is issuing its very first introduction statement over such a horrific incident that has shaken the whole nation," the statutory body was quoted as saying by Dawn newspaper.

India Kochi: Chase by Audi driver caused accident that led to death of Kerala models: Kochi Police

India Kochi: Chase by Audi driver caused accident that led to death of Kerala models: Kochi Police

Kochi: As probe continues into the death case of the two models who died in Kochi, city Police commissioner CH Nagaraju said that the
Audi driver, Saiju Thankachan,
chased the models with ill-intent, causing their accident.

Saiju Thankachan chasing the models in his car was the reason behind their accident and led to their death, CH Nagaraju added.

Miss South India 2021 Ansi Kabeer, who was crowned Miss Kerala in 2019, and the runner-up in the competition that year Anjana Shajahan had
died in a road accident in Kochi's Vyttilla
after their car hit a divider. Saiju Thankachan allegedly chased the models on the night of their death in his Audi car.

The Kochi Police chief added that Saiju is a drug addict.

"Saiju has exploited many women in the past. If they file complaints, we will take action. The possibility of suo motto (cognizance) is also being looked at. There are many charges that can be levelled against him. Saiju chased the models with ill intent, eventually causing their accident," CH Nagaraju said.

Sajju reportedly chased the models with the intent of making them to stay in Kochi for the night.

Meanwhile, Saiju claimed that he followed the models to ask the one on the wheel, Abdul Rehman, to not drive.

Kerala Models' death | My sister was not drunk, says car crash victim's brother

Saiju's Audi car was seized by the police last month. Condoms and some medicines were reportedly found inside the car.

Apart from this, the police allegedly recovered several pictures of girls on his phone and pictures showing drug use as well.

"We have identified his connection to drug peddlers and these contacts of his are also being questioned," police said.

Sajju's bail plea was opposed by the prosecution on the grounds that unlike in the case of the
owner of No 18 Hotel Roy Vayalat,
Saiju chased the cars with the knowledge that the driver was drunk. This is liable for the offence of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, the prosecution argued,

The court denied bail to Sajju and remanded him to judicial custody. The prosecution pleaded for police custody, which was granted till November 30.

Remand report also pins Saiju Thankachan as the cause of accident. The report claims that Abdul Rehman increased speed of the vehicle in an attempt to save the models from Saiju.
